The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to men and women in the construction trade who have life-altering injuries. Once a year the association honors multiple recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil endured a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the stroke left his left leg greatly impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would most likely become restricted to a wheelchair.
No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, resulting in financial stress on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they were not able to afford the device in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could learn how to use it.
Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the incredible grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
